Flowers wilt. Candy goes right to my butt. I have plenty of teddy bears and other stuffed animals; in fact I’ve given away dozens in the past few years. Now, a mushy Valentine card, that’s good. But a really romantic gift is one that shows that the giver thought of YOU instead of all the cliches.

DH gave me 1GB of RAM for my computer for Valentine’s Day. THAT was romantic — my poor computer was choking and gasping on its lousy 512 MB, and I depend on my computer for all sorts of things. Just like the lapdesk he gave me for Christmas a year ago, which has made my paper-grading much comfier, and thus my life more pleasant.

Now THAT’S Romance, with a capital R.

I finally tried to work a little bit today on the PHP mailing list for CCSC:SE. I followed the directions for editing the config.php file, inserted all the data Hunter had given me, and oops! It couldn’t find the database. This exchange of email followed:

Okay, Hunter, maybe I’m just an idiot. I just got back to this, changed the config.php file to put in the information you gave me, and get a Fatal Error saying unknown database.
I was also thinking about installing WordPress in my public_html area, but it’s not happy because there’s no wordpress database for it to find and there’s no way for me to automagically create it, apparently. Damn, this was so easy at my own web hosting service — they provide us with Fantastico which makes everything a no-brainer.
Can you help me some more ::sheepish grin::?
Thanks,
Julia

I’m not sure, but I think I get the idiot title this time… :-) I think what happened was that I did all the prep-work for creating a DB for you, but I didn’t actually create the DB. (Oops!)
I’ve created the DB now, so things should behave a little better for you now… :-)
I think I’m supposed to tell you to talk w/ (the web master)before installing any blogging software like WordPress. If she doesn’t have a problem with it, I’ll be happy to help you get that up and running…

Ah, the joys and wonders of dealing with academic bureaucracy — I guess I get to tell the webmaster I’ve been running WordPress on my own web site for ten months and that I am perfectly capable of administrating it myself, no I DON’T need any support to speak of from OIT. Part of the point is to learn this myself, after all.

Progress so far: bought two books online—the Visual Quickpro guide came today,Learning PHP 5 is on the way. Went to http://www.php.net/ and downloaded some tutorial materials. Downloaded the PHPList package and tried to install it at work, got server errors, emailed Hunter for help. I looked at some of the PHPList code and it doesn’t make sense yet. But it will.

I did get the latest version of Quicken and installed it, archiving my old data files and starting fresh on 1/1. Last night I got the checking/savings records up to date and paid a bunch of sadly overdue bills. It’s a small start.I used to be pretty successful with sitting down at the computer every Sunday night, paying bills and updating records for the week. I plan to get back to that. The other thing I need to do is get Quicken connected with the investment accounts so I can follow the 401(k) progress.

i started fooling around with 43 Things last night. So far I’m up to 9 goals, but I can’t quite seem to get linked to 43 Places as well. Until I can either figure out how link the list into a page posting (which means figure out the JavaScript or, Goddess forbid, actually WORK ON one of the current goals — learning PHP), you can see my 43 Things here.
