Last time it was Dee’s fault — she arranged for the fusing/flameworking workshop that made me realize I could play with fire in a carefully arranged home studio. This time it’s Andrea’s fault. She found that Nazeem Allayl Studio offered a Saturday morning walk-in workout class at their Perimeter studio, halfway between her place and mine, and convinced me to go with her so neither of us would feel too old or too fat by ourselves.

We were both relieved that first morning to find that she was not the largest, nor was I the oldest, woman there. So we went back the next week. And the next. By then I had found that this was actually do-able, damn good exercise plus a whole lot of fun!

When the next six-week class session came around, I decided what the hell, let’s try a choreography class as well and learn an actual dance — an actual BELLYDANCE. Yep. BELLYDANCE. Traditional Raqs Sharki, Middle Eastern folkdance, is done by women of all ages, shapes, and sizes as part of their own culture, and Nazeem Allayl Studio encourages that in their program, so why not?

So I took one choreography class, then another, then another. Last week I started a fourth choreography combinations class on Turkish style; tomorrow my basic technique drill class starts so I can learn to do the moves precisely and properly.

I started doing bellydance for exercise, but as I told Schadia after class last week, “I want to dance, not just sweat.” For me, most forms of exercise are B-O-R-I-N-G and tedious and I won’t stick with them. Bellydance accommodates where I am now and gives me lots of room to grow as a fit and healthy person — exercise I can and hopefully will stay with as long as I can move.

I got this from Kandice Seeber, who got it from the BeadedLily’s Sketchbook blog — sounds like a fun meme!

THE RULES:

Respond and rework. Answer the questions on your own blog; replace one question that you dislike with a question of your own invention; add one more question of your own.

THE QUESTIONS:

What is your current obsession?
Once I finish up my grades, I’ll get back to working on borosilicate glass leaf pendants, trying to work out some nice shapes & colors.

Which item from your closet are you wearing most lately?
Jeans, jeans, and more jeans, with the occasional cargo pants thrown in there.

What was the last thing you bought?
A couple of magazines this afternoon during our regular Saturday trip to Borders.

What are you listening to right now?
Nothing except the ambient noise around here. Sometimes silence is the best!

What are you reading?
Anna Quindlen’s Rise and Shine

What 4 words would you use to describe yourself?
Introverted, creative, sardonic, strong-willed

What is your current guilty pleasure?
I don’t really have guilty pleasures, but maybe it’s reading “chick-lit” and romance novels.

What would you do if the internet was irreparably damaged and you had to find another way to connect?
I would like to think I’d write letters, but I’d probably just stay unconnected. I’m not a phone person so that’s out.

Where would you go if you could travel anywhere right now?
Probably New Zealand, since that’s the place I most want to visit.

If you could grant someone else one wish, what would it be?
I’d give my father a cure for his heart disease and pulmonary fibrosis.

What flower are you most anxious to see bloom this spring?
Actually, I’ll be just as happy when everything quits blooming since the pollen has made me utterly miserable this spring.

What are you most happy doing?
Hanging out with my husband, or melting glass, or both together.

Care to share some wisdom?
Two things:

  1. Life’s not fair, so get over it.
  2. If you’re in a hole, stop digging.

If I walked into your work space today what would you want to show me? What would you want to hide?
I’d want to turn on my torch and show you how I make my beads and pendants. I wouldn’t really want to hide anything in the workspace, but I might close some of the other doors in the house!

What makes you laugh out loud?
The ICanHasCheezburger and IHasAHotDog websites. They also make me go “Awwwww!”

How many pets do you have, and what kind?
Three cats, plus the 80 or so I work with as a <a href=“http://goodmews.org>Good Mews volunteer.

Link back to me if you do this meme yourself!

According to Typealyzer, the Art of the Firebird blog is Myers-Briggs type ESTP, which they define as:

ESTP — The Doers

ESTP What Type is My Blog?

The active and play-ful type. They are especially attuned to people and things around them and often full of energy, talking, joking and engaging in physical out-door activities.

The Doers are happiest with action-filled work which craves their full attention and focus. They might be very impulsive and more keen on starting something new than following it through. They might have a problem with sitting still or remaining inactive for any period of time.

Hmmm. In reality my MBT is ISTJ; that’s how I’ve tested over & over with many variations of the test. Perhaps I could explain the difference in that I do, in fact, tend to blog about things I do more than about things I ponder. I also am a bit more open about my feelings on the blog than I may be IRL because it’s sometimes easier for me to write things than say them aloud.

Thanks to Cindy Gimbrone for the discovery!

Tagged!

Okay, just when I was starting to feel a bit left out, I’ve been tagged by my friend Marcy Lamberson of Studio Marcy, who makes totally adorable sculptural beads.

The rules for this tagging are:

  1. Link to your tagger and list these rules on your blog.
  2. Share 7 facts about yourself on your blog, some random, some weird.
  3. Tag 7 people at the end of your post by including links to their blogs.
  4. Let them know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blogs.

So, seven random and/or weird factoids about me:

  1. I often drive faster than the speed limit, but I’ve never gotten a ticket for it.
  2. Most people think I’m about ten years younger than I really am.
  3. I can’t stand having cold feet.
  4. I very much like beards on men, but only if they are well-groomed (like DH’s, unlike the ex’s :-) ).
  5. When I eat tomato sauce, it makes the inside of my nose and sinuses feel tickle-y.
  6. I am allergic to Toys ‘r’ Us and Bed Bath & Beyond.? Seriously.? If I go into one of those stores, my sinuses close up and my eyes get all puffy and swollen.
  7. I love writing with funky colored pens.

Seven fellow bloggers that I am tagging (trying not to tag those who have already been tagged!):

  1. Laurie
  2. Robin
  3. UsagiWeaver
  4. Mike
Damn, this is getting tough! Melissa has beaten me to everyone!
  5. Gwacie
  6. Lydia
  7. Judith

Now to go finish leaving those comments…

Okay, I admit it. I’ve been a slacker for a couple of weeks. My bad! First it was exams for summer term, then a week off when I was a total slug, then a week of meeting and advisement hell. So I am way, way behind on BotW, because people HAVE been posting good stuff!
