I had good intentions for this five-day weekend, I truly did. Like so many of my good intentions, they didn’t get completely fulfilled. I was going to:

  • catch up on the massive grading backlog. Well, I at least sorted out the papers and graded a little bit. A very little bit.
  • get a bunch of items listed at ArtFire and 1000 Markets for holiday shopping. I did get some photos taken and cropped/resized, so I can at least get some bracelets up this week, I hope.
  • do some more cold-connected jewelry pieces. Nada. I did do another chainmaille bracelet, but that’s it.
  • try out the Prismacolor pencils-on-copper technique. Nope, though I did at least get a bottle of gray gesso & some Krylon spray Saturday, plus found a couple of sheets of phosphor bronze mixed in among the copper at Dick Blick.
  • tidy up my studio. Let’s not even go there.
  • catch up on some reading. I barely managed to read the newspaper a couple of those days.
  • Sleep. Now, that’s the one true success this weekend. Most nights I did get plenty of sleep, which I badly needed.

On the plus side, I did a good deed by filling in for the Thursday evening meds person at Good Mews (and getting thoroughly carved up by Silver and Mickel in the process). I spent time with my entire family on Thanksgiving day (getting rather overwhelmed in the process), and some time today with part of it when we went over to wish my mom a Happy Birthday.

I was trying to photograph some of my chainmaille bracelets tonight to get them listed at 1000 Markets and Artfire. Photography isn’t my favorite part of the process, but tonight was particularly aggravating.

One problem I’ve had in the past is getting a clearly focused picture because I run into depth of field issues. In automatic mode, my camera shoots at a low aperture, typically around F5.6, which means I don’t have a lot of DOF. If I up the aperture, the camera thinks there isn’t enough light. So I’d gotten a daylight fluorescent bulb for one of the regular lamps in the studio, and I added that to the two photo fluorescents I have in there. When I turned all three on, it certainly SEEMED bright enough in there, even with the photo tent filtering the light.

I decided to try to figure out Av mode (aperture priority) on my camera. Well, the user manual doesn’t exactly explain it clearly, but I finally managed. So I set the aperture to F16, but then couldn’t get it to accept a slow enough shutter speed. I generally use the two second timer on the camera, and have it on a tripod, so I should in theory be able to use a long exposure. But the camera just wasn’t happy.

I finally got some pictures taken, just to trial-and-error. When I downloaded them, I found that the ones on the black background seem a little over-exposed, if anything, and the ones on the beige tile background are a little dark. I’ll have to see how well that can be corrected in GIMP.

Some of the pictures seemed to focus through the full depth of field, but most didn’t — either the front part or the back part were still blurry. I really wish I had a “Photographing Glass and Metal for Dummies” guide so that the camera could do its job the way I want!

I’ve been struggling with photographing my lampwork, that is, when I could make myself TRY to photograph it with our Kodak point-and-shoot digital camera. No matter what I did, I ended up frustrated. It was almost impossible to get decently focused pictures even using the macro setting; getting enough light was a herculean task; finding a background that didn’t look simply awful, well… It all made me put off photographing if there was anything else at all to do.

I thought it was just me being inept. So Andrea came over to give me a photography tutorial. It helped, but not enough. We were able to improve the lighting and the backgrounds, but the focus still wouldn’t behave.

Finally, I realized that maybe it wasn’t just me. Maybe it really WAS the equipment. Maybe it was time to upgrade to a DSLR — something that DH has been coveting for years, but neither of us could justify the cost…until it became a business issue.? So I started my usual thorough research.

One of my first thoughts was “could I, should I reuse my old SLR lenses from my film camera?” As it turns out, if I was willing to live with manual focus (um, YEAH, NOT a problem), the answer was “ABSOLUTELY.” My regular lens is nothing too special, but my macro zoom lens, a Vivitar Series I 70-210mm Komine, turns out to be something of a cult item today. Since it’s a Pentax mount lens (I had a Pentax ME Super), I ignored the omnipresent Canons and Nikons and settled on the Pentax K200D after verifying that today’s Pentax bodies do indeed play nice with legacy lenses. Then the question was where to buy it — there are a LOT of disreputable camera equipment sellers out there.? All my research pointed to B&H Photography, so I placed my order Saturday night (the store is apparently owned by Hasidic Jews, so not only is the storefront not open on Saturday, they won’t even accept web orders on the Sabbath!).

The camera arrived last night. I unpacked it, set it up, swiped the old SD memory card from the Kodak, and started experimenting. It was immediately clear I had some learnin’ to do!

Today after Thanksgiving dinner, Andrea and I went in the studio and decided to get it working. It took some experimenting with both lenses, finagling to get the tripod at the right distance with the lens, and getting a stepstool so vertically-challenged me could stand on it to see through the viewfinder looking down at an angle at the beads, but…

OH ?? MY??? GOD.

I could actually FOCUS on the beads. The shots were clear.? The two-second timer feature kept me from jiggling the camera, even on the tripod, as I took the picture. The lighting could still use some improvement, but that’s easy, and until I can do it GIMP will adjust for it just fine.

I think I’m going to be able to stop procrastinating on the photography. I think I’ll be able to get things photographed for sale in a reasonably timely fashion. I’ve already revised my 1000 Markets shop and resubmitted it for approval, complete with new photos.

Here’s just a couple of examples of what we did tonight:

I got this response back today:

Hi, I appreciate the work you put into your product and that you took the time to set up your shop and seek approval. Unfortunately, we are focused on “finished” products and do not yet have a place for wonderfully handmade supplies like beads and yarn.

There’s just one thing — they already have approved two lampwork bead artists who are selling actual beads, not just finished products.? There’s also nothing in the terms of service, policies, or anywhere else that mentions “finished” products.? So I questioned the decision. Nothing’s resolved yet in regards to the supplies issue, but I am going to take some decent pictures tomorrow of my “finished” products, post them, and see if I can get approved at least for those.

As far as I am concerned, it is 1000Markets’ choice whether to consider handmade supplies as proper for their venue or not. It’s their site!? I just think there should be a definite policy and they should adhere to it for everyone.? I’m going to feel like a real rat, though, if this pushes Andrea and FormFire Glassworks out of there. I didn’t raise the issue to try to screw them!

If the truth about my stuff was that they didn’t feel like my pictures (they do rather suck), or my work, is up to their standards, then don’t B.S. me about it — that’s REALLY offensive. Tell me the truth, and I can either improve up to the standard or move on.? Just DON’T feed me B.S.!!
